How to Remedy Common Carpet Stains

  1. Coffee or Tea – Blot the area with a clean cloth to remove as much of the liquid as possible. Mix one part white vinegar with one part water and pour it onto the stain. Let it sit for a few minutes before blotting it up with a clean cloth. Repeat this process until the stain is gone.

  1. Mud – Let the mud dry completely before attempting to clean it up. Once it’s dry, vacuum over the area to remove as much of the dried mud as possible. If there’s any remaining stain, mix one part laundry detergent with two parts warm water and gently sponge it onto the affected area. Blot dry with a clean cloth.

  1. Ink – Immediately blot the ink with a clean cloth to remove as much as possible. Do not rub! Next, soak a cotton ball or Q-tip in rubbing alcohol and hold it over the stain for a few seconds. Gently blot the area until the ink is gone. If there’s any remaining residue, mix one tablespoon dishwashing liquid with two cups of warm water and sponge it onto the area before blotting dry with a clean cloth.

  1. Red Wine – Blot the wine with a clean cloth to remove as much as possible. Next, mix one part white vinegar with one part water and pour it over the stain. Let it sit for a few minutes then blot again with a clean cloth until the stain is gone. If there’s any remaining residue, mix one tablespoon dishwashing liquid with two cups of warm water and sponge it onto the area before blotting dry once more.

  1. Grease or Oil – Place a sheet of paper towel over the stain and weigh it down with something heavy like a book so that it can absorb as much of the grease or oil as possible overnight. In the morning, vacuum over the area to remove any residual grease or oil before applying a professional carpet cleaning solution.
